Fran says:

"The canvas I have created runs with a vintage circus and magic theme, with the heavily textured background coming from a common kitchen cupboard item! I have also utilised polystyrene shapes as dimensional embellishments and used Sculpture Medium on material to create dramatic 3D stage curtains.”

Step-by-step… Sculpting with a Mixture of Media

1 Draw a circle. Use cling film to cover the canvas and adhere with soft gel medium.

Paint with black gesso and highlight with white gesso whilst still wet to create a marbled effect.

Draw another circle onto card. Cover circle with copper tape layers before cutting out.

Hammer copper circle with a meat tenderising hammer to give a beaten, pitted effect.

Spread Light Molding Paste into the circular recess in cling film to add texture. Sprinkle Ultra Thick Embossing Crystals into the wet paste.

After heating the crystals, stamp into the molten enamel to imprint the stamp image.

Adhere and drape voile material onto the canvas then paint with Sculpture Medium mixed with mica powder.

To make the stars, roll out paper clay to a 2mm thickness then cut shapes with cookie cutters and stamp gently into the wet clay.

After drying with a heat tool, highlight surfaces with ink pads and mica powder to bring out the stamped details.

To finish the project:

For the finishing touches, spray the canvas with mica spray to give a shimmery finish, rub mica powder around the edges and coil cotton around the copper circle. Add more draped net material, glitter highlights and sequins and dull down with gesso. Lastly, glue the clay stars, an image and the painted polystyrene shapes and stickers in place.
